2023-2024 Volleyball Alberta Board of Directors

The Volleyball Alberta (VA) Annual General Meeting was held in Red Deer on Saturday, December 9, 2023. Prior to welcoming our 2023-2024 Directors, we need to thank our outgoing directors.

We would like to thank the following outgoing Directors as we recognize their completed terms of service: Bruce Edwards – 5 years of service (2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23), Sonja Johnston – 3 years of service (2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23), Travis Rott – 6 years of service (2017-2018, 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23), and Julie Beschell – 1 year of service (2022-23). While these outgoing directors have completed their terms, we will not bid farewell to them as they continue to play active roles in our sport.

Each of these individuals provided Volleyball Alberta with their time and talents – we truly appreciate the passion and energy they provided as they moved our organization forward.

Volleyball Alberta is proud to announce that the following individuals have joined us as members of the board:

  • Curt Clement (President)

Curt is excited to join the board of directors as President of Volleyball Alberta. He joins us with a decade of board leadership experience, most recently serving the last 9 years with the YMCA of Northern Alberta Board of Directors. During this time, he has served on both the Audit & Finance sub-committee along with the strategic planning task-force and fund development task-force. Professionally, Curt has 24 years in market leadership and business development currently working with Deloitte where he leads their consulting practice for public sector clients in Western Canada. He has a strong background in board governance, financial reporting & performance, stakeholder engagement, strategy and leadership. He is looking forward to working in partnership with everyone involved in this great game across Alberta while securing a sustainable future for all members.

  • Jeff Smith (Director)

Being involved in volleyball for a long time, including coaching at all levels up to being the current head coach of the Men’s national sitting program, Jeff is a proud advocate of our sport. He is also a motivated experienced commercial insurance broker. His expertise will be invaluable for the board in terms of risk management and strategic planning.

  • Kyle Fraser (Director)

Kyle’s 20+ years of HR experience in multiple industries, combined with his knowledge has given him proficiencies in developing and implementing valued added strategic plans and programs in HR related fields. In addition, his long-time involvement in volleyball as a Regional referee has enabled him to know the sport and to guide the board in the right direction.

  • Julia Donnelly (Director)

As an active volleyball coach with a strong background in business administration and finance, Julia can offer fresh perspective to board with relation to operations strategy and financial planning.

  • Sarah Ridley (Director)

With 20 years of experience in the field of community sports and recreation at City of Edmonton, Sarah can provide strategic oversight and efficient management of complex recreational program grids, sport tournaments and special events. In addition, her experience in policy development, risk assessment and risk mitigation for organizations and major events is an asset for Volleyball Alberta.

  • Mackenzie Allen (Director)

Mackenzie is not a stranger to volleyball and played for MRU women’s team for 5 years. With senior leadership experience in finance and business development, Mackenzie brings innovative thinking and strategic planning.

Debbie Nyarko (Vice-President), Eryn Orysiuk (Secretary/Treasurer), Michelle Whyte (Director), Chad Leier (Director at Large), Julia Pasieka (Director), and Teigan Lawton (Director) continue to serve on the Board of Directors. We wish the best for our new and returning members in their new roles. We trust that volleyball in Alberta will receive strong guidance from our board team.
